Other Side of this World

I wrote this through the eyes of a friend who was in the hospital in San Francisco undergoing chemotherapy for leukemia.

When my life's but a memory
Driftwood on a glassy sea
This deep pain will all have come and gone
But now it lies here by side
Constant companion, even in my sleep
Terrible reminder I'm still alive
Sunrise fires the crown of the City
Birds sing the dawn through my room
In that moment before awakening I wonder
"Will my eyes open to you?
Or shall I waken on the other side of this world?"
I wonder as the sky spins high
All my years today flew by
Leaving me this moment
A jewel in my unsteady hand
Is time really mine to spend
Now to heal and now to rend?
Now to feel the end always just out of view
Sunrise fires.....
Each and everyone passes through the misty veil
Do we ever return?
I don't know and so I won't let go
Because I want to see my children grow
And find their way through this troubled world
Please let me hold them just once again
Sunrise fires.....
